Today, we are going to create a farm field with brightly colored and patterned rows and a silo and barn off in the distance. We will learn about PATTERN, SPACE (Perspective), COLOR and TEXTURE in this lesson.
As always, you can use any art materials you have around your house but this is what I used....
- Paper
- Pencil
- Black Sharpie or marker, crayon or pastel
- Colors of any kind (marker, paint, watercolor, crayon etc.)
Step TWO: DRAW your Sun, Barn and Silo ... pencil first!!!!
- Your sun or moon, barn and silo should be above the horizon line. It should be touching it, not floating in the air :)
- Remember, in art class we always start with basic shapes first. Everything in the world (even the most tricky things) can be drawn using basic lines and shapes.
- For the Sun/moon we will use a HALF-CIRCLE, and we will start with RECTANGLES for the barn and silo.
- add a HALF-CIRCLE to the top of your tall, skinny RECTANGLE... your silo
- Add some DIAGONAL LINES or a TRIANGLE to the top of your short RECTANGLE... your barn.
- TEXTURE is the way something LOOKS and FEELS. Artists often use simple LINES and SHAPES to create TEXTURE in their artwork.
- Check out the youTUBE videos below to learn more about TEXTURE!

Choose what time of day your artwork takes place....day or night.

Step FOUR: CHOOSE your color scheme:In our previous lesson, we discussed RELATED COLOR FAMILIES and COMPLIMENTARY COLOR PAIRS. You can veiw the post and decide to use one of those color schemes if you would like. Today, I am going to remind you of one of the first color schemes you learned about. Colors that make us feel WARM or COOL. WARM COLORS: such as RED, YELLOW, and ORANGE make us feel warm because they remind us of things like the sun or fire. COOL COLORS: such as BLUE, GREEN, and PURPLE make us feel cool because they remind us of cool things like water, grass, or cold grapes. |
Step FOUR: Create PATTERNS and TEXTUREChoose either WARM or COOL COLORS for the sky and use the other for your field. Using CRAYONS or SHARPIE (something permanent-NOT washable marker!) CREATE different patterns in each section of your field and sky. I chose to use WARM COLORS for my sky and COOL COLORS for my field. |
Step FIVE: Add COLOR !!!After you finish adding your patterns, you can paint with the HOMEMADE WATERCOLORS we made previously. If you have paints of your own, you can use those too! If you do not have either to use, there is a trick that works with most types of paper and washable markers.
