Today is National find a RAINBOW day! Rainbows have always felt somewhat magical to us. And who can blame us? Rainbows are beautiful and a little mysterious. Rainbows are caused by the reflection, refraction, and dispersion of light in water, resulting in a visual spectrum of light appearing in the sky, taking the form of a multicolored arc. These words REFLECTION, REFRACTION, and DISPERSION are going to be the inspiration for this unique and colorful project today! |
A symbol, is a picture or an image that represents bigger things like feelings, ideas, or emotions. Take for example, the symbolism of the rainbow. The rainbow is a comprised of seven different colors. Each of these colors is vibrant and beautiful, and each one is different than the next. This conveys a beautiful message of inclusiveness and cohesion. It demonstrates how beautiful diversity can be. Rainbows are a beautiful representation of our own selves as unique individuals. Like a rainbow, we each have different qualities and strengths inside each of us that make us WHO WE ARE....and there is NO ONE else like YOU!
- TODAY we are going to take a different meaning of REFLECTION. We are going to take some time to look deep inside ourselves and REFLECT upon our unique qualities and attributes. What makes you, YOU?
- AFTER we REFLECT and make a list of the wonderful things that make us WHO WE ARE... we are going to take those things that may be invisible to others and REFRACT them and include them in our artwork for all to see.
- In your artwork, you will highlight and DISPERSE each of your strengths INDIVIDUALLY just as a rainbow highlights each beautiful color. We will do this with intricate lettering and patterns and vibrant colors.
STEP 1: Draw your finger printA fingerprint is a trace of a human finger left on a surface. Human fingers have small structures on them (like mountains and valleys). These structures are unique in every human; they can be used as means of identification. There are no two fingerprints that are identical which is why we are using it for this project. ONLY YOU have your fingerprint. There are 4 main categories of fingerprints |
2.) Starting from the center, start to draw lines that mimic the direction and pattern of your fingerprint. Give yourself enough space between each line. REMEMBER: we will not be able to draw every single line you see. We need to have our lines spaced far enough apart to be able to write inside of them. |
REFLECTION: Brainstorm a list of unique things about yourself... Take some time to REFLECT and think of all of the things that make you, YOU! These can be physical (extrinsic) traits like long hair, or glasses. Or, they can be those invisible or (Intrinsic) traits like personality, beliefs, likes and dislikes etc. Here is the start of my list for myself and for my daughter (she talked and I wrote her ideas) |
REFRACTION: Write inside the lines Take some time to carefully write down each item from your list inside the lines of your fingerprint. This is where you can have fun with different writing styles or adding other SYMBOLS and PATTERNS as well. PENCIL FIRST! Trace your pencil lines with SHARPIE when you are finished. HINT: check out how I used different styles of lettering and added other symbols and patterns to fill the fingerprint with details! |
DISPERSION: Add COLOR Adding color will really make each individual item you wrote down stand out! You can use anything you have available. Remember a few tricks....
