Getting Started...
- Egg Cartons (1 full egg carton gets you about 3-4 flowers)
- Paint (any kind of paint works, even watercolor!)
- Glue/Hot Glue (preferrable) hot glue is nice so you don't have to wait for things to dry but regular school glue works just fine.
- Stems (pipe cleaners, sticks, straws, popsicle sticks....lots of things can work for the stems...you can even draw your stems on paper and glue the flowers right onto the paper)
- Cue Tips (optional) these can be a nice touch to the inside of your flowers.
Step 1: Choose your Colors
First we will review some color basics....
PRIMARY COLORS: These are the three most important colors in the rainbow. With these three colors we can create any color in the rainbow. | SECONDARY COLORS: These colors are created when 2 primary colors mix together. Thats why they fall in between the primary colors on the color wheel. |
RELATED COLOR FAMILIES:
These are colors that are like family, they are very close together and stand by each other's side. These FAMILIES consist of two of the three PRIMARY COLORS and the SECONDARY COLOR they mix to create. Needless to say, these colors mix very well and create beautiful colors when painting.
These are colors that like a pair of good friends... although they are beautiful, bold and bright on their own, when they are together they are truly outstanding! These colors love to make each other look good....they "compliment" each other. Like some pairs of friends, they are COMPLETE OPPOSITES. This makes it easy to find them on the color wheel. The pair consists of a PRIMARY COLOR and the SECONDARY COLOR that is OPPOSITE or across from it on the color wheel. Although, these colors make each other look really great, they DO NOT mix well together when painting. They each like to shine beautifully on their own...like all best friends should.
Step 2: Paint Your Egg Carton
After choosing your colors have some fun painting your egg carton. If you have cue tips to use, paint them as well. Also, if you would like leaves on your flowers, you can paint the top of the egg carton to use as leaves later. Check out this color mixing chart if you need a reminder on how to mix colors. |
Step 3: Take a break....Get some fresh air!
Step 4: CUT your Flower Shapes
Step 5: BUILD your flowers!
- FIRST I cut a small rectangle and made little snips to create a fringe.
- SECOND I used glue and rolled it around the wire I planned to use for the stem.
- THIRD we poked holes in the center of each layer and glued them one at a time to the center.
- FOURTH we added our leaves
- FINALLY we found some green "bamboo" straws that we used for my daughters birthday party last year and thought those would work for the stem to make it more sturdy and stiff. We added that to our wire and Voala!...Finished!
