What is POP ART?Who knew you could become famous by painting soup cans, ketchup bottles or sunglasses? Many artists became famous in the mid-1900s by creating pop art paintings based on everyday products, which we'll learn about in this lesson. Pop art is a style of art based on simple, bold images of everyday items, such as soup cans, painted in bright colors. Pop artists created pictures of consumer product labels and packaging, photos of celebrities, comic strips, and animals. | Some famous POP Artists include Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Romero Britto and Yayoi Kusama. |
Which POP Artist are YOU?
Who is ANDY WARHOL?Andy Warhol was part of the pop art movement. He was born Andrew Warhola in 1928 in Pennsylvania. His parents were from a part of Europe that is now part of Slovakia. They moved to New York in the 1920s. His first job was illustrating adverts in fashion magazines. Now is he known as one of the most influential artists who ever lived! In 1961 Andy came up with the concept of using mass-produced commercial goods in his art. He called it Pop Art. He would use commercial images and reproduce them over and over. One early example of this was a series on Campbell's Soup cans. In one painting he had two hundred Campbell's soup cans repeated over and over. Andy often used silkscreen and lithography to create his pictures. Andy also used pictures of famous people. He would repeat the same portrait over and over, but use different colors and effects in each picture. Some of the celebrities he had as subjects include Marilyn Monroe, Che Guevara, Mao Zedong, and Elizabeth Taylor. Andy soon became a very famous celebrity himself. He opened a new studio called "The Factory". He not only worked on his art there, but had large parties with wealthy and famous people. It became one of the cool places to be in New York City. |
Let's Begin....
Step 1: Brainstorm Ideas for your soup
What sounds catchy with your name?... (Example: Castellano's....)
| Other words for SOUP: (synonym)
|
|
Winner "Castellano's Cheeseburger Chowder"
Step 2: Find a can and print your labelFirst find a can and measure how tall it is. Most soup cans from the store are either...
(don't have a printer? Thats ok just cut a rectangle strip of paper that is the size of your can) |

Step 3: Start with the LetteringYou want to make sure you have enough room to get the words on your soup can label. So begin by sketching some block letters with PENCIL FIRST! When I am drawing block letters, I first lightly sketch the word first. After that, I create an outline around the original letter to give it shape. Here is a youTube clip I found showing the same thing. | |
Step 4: Add images to your LabelNow it's time to get creative with your labels and add some pictures that show what is INSIDE the can. If my soup is a "Cheesburger Chowder" I should definitely add a some cheeseburger related things. Find a unique way to utilize the circle in your label to help your design. I turned my circle into the cheeseburger and added ketchup, mustard, a soda and french fries to my design as well. To create CONTRAST I added a blue and white checkerboard table cloth to the bottom. | Remember to.... *After you finish drawing with PENCIL, trace your lines with SHARPIE or a DARK fine tip MARKER and add some bright bold COLORS! |
